What to expect at your first visit.

First visits should feel unhurried. Whether you're bringing home a newborn or transferring an older child into our practice, the goal of that first appointment is simple: to meet your family, listen carefully, and start building a relationship you can lean on for years.
Here's what a first visit at UniPedsMD looks like, and how to prepare so you can spend your time on the conversation that matters.
Before you come in
A short pre-visit checklist keeps things smooth so we can spend our time together on your child, not on paperwork:
- Insurance card and photo ID. If you're on Medicaid or a plan we haven't seen before, bring it — we accept most plans and can usually confirm coverage on the spot.
- Your child's immunization record and any prior medical records — well-visit summaries, hospital discharge papers for newborns, growth charts, or specialist notes.
- A list of current medications, including vitamins, supplements, and anything used only as needed.
- Your questions. Write them down the night before. Even the ones that feel small — sleep, feeding, a rash you've been watching — belong at this visit.
When you arrive
Plan to arrive about 15 minutes before your appointment. Our front desk will confirm your insurance, hand you any remaining intake forms, and walk you back when a room is ready. Older children are welcome to bring a book or a small comfort item; for babies, a fresh diaper and a bottle or feed can help the visit go gently.
The well-check itself
A first well-visit usually runs 40–60 minutes. We move at your child's pace, and the order can shift depending on mood and age, but every visit includes:
- Growth and vitals. Length or height, weight, head circumference for the little ones, and a plot on the growth curve so we can talk about trends over time — not any single number.
- A developmental check-in. Age-appropriate screening for milestones, feeding, sleep, behavior, school, and — for older kids and teens — mood, friendships, and safety. We use validated screening tools and, more importantly, we listen.
- A head-to-toe exam. Heart, lungs, ears, eyes, mouth, skin, belly, hips, reflexes. We narrate what we're doing so nothing feels like a surprise.
- A conversation about vaccines. We follow the AAP schedule and are always happy to walk through the "why" behind each one. If you have concerns, bring them — this is exactly the right place to ask.
Time for your questions
We build every first visit around unhurried Q&A. Parents often arrive with a mental list of things they meant to ask their last pediatrician and never got around to. This is the visit to bring them.
Common first-visit questions include feeding (breast, bottle, solids), sleep, growth curves, screen-time, potty-training, discipline, sports physicals, and — increasingly — mental-health screening for older kids. Nothing is too small.
Before you leave
We'll set up your Patient Portal so you can message the office, request refills, access records, and pay bills online. We'll book your next well-visit, and — if your child needs a sick visit before then — you'll know exactly how to reach us. Most days we hold same-day sick slots, and Saturday hours are reserved for after-hours illness.
Above all: leave knowing you have a pediatrician in your corner. That's the whole point.
